NORTHPOINT AND THE RVC

Tel: 01306 628489

The Joint Venture Practice was established in 2008 as a unique partnership between Northpoint Veterinary Services and the Royal Veterinary College.  The JVP comprises of five farm animal vets and and based from our offices in Leaden Roding and North Mymms, it serves the farm animal community in Essex and southern Suffolk.

This unique partnership not only utilises its vets in the field but also has access to the considerable academic resources of the Royal Veterinary College.  Working closely with the RVC's farm animal hospital for cases which require treatment not possible 'in the field', the JVP aims to provide an excellent service to all of its clients both at the herd or flock level as well as to the individual animal, whether it is a pet goat or a pedigree heifer.

Our Vets

Julian Dare  BVetMed MRCVS

After graduation from the Royal Veterinary College, Jules went straight into mixed practice in Cornwall.  Here he rapidly developed a keen interest in all aspects of farm animal medicine and surgery, and in between TB tests, helped to look after a number of beef and dairy herds ranging from 5 to 1000 cows.

Jules joined the Westpoint Vet Group in 2005 as the senior vet at the Northpoint office and has continues to develop his interests in dairy cow mastitis control and fertility as well as beef herd helth and production.  As a result of the 2007 Bluetongue outbreak in his practice area, Jules has worked closely with local and regional farmer  groups and national companies to promote the Bluetongue vaccination scheme throughout the country.

Ian Roper  BVetMed MRCVS

Ian graduated in 2007 from the Royal Veterinary College.  He joined Westpoint straight away, having completed a lot of his student requirements here.  His first year was mainly spent in West Sussex, from where he took on a major role in calf health and rearing.  He also managed to see a bit of the wider world, helping out the vets in our branch during the recent expansion.

Since August 2008, he has been on the permanent staff at the Northpoint office, where he works closely with several major dairies and continues with his calf health role.  Ian also has significant teaching responsibilities, towards students from the Royal Veterinary College.

When not working, he is most likely to be found playing rugby or watching it.

Peter Aitken BVSc MACVS MRCVS

Peter started working as a veterinarian in 2002 in farm animal practice in New Zealand after finishing his studies at Massey University.

Since graduating Peter has been focused on farm animals, working for three years in New  Zealand before heading to the UK to work at the Northpoint practice for three years. He then went back to NZ, with his now wife, Rosie, but has returned to the UK to work with us again.

During his absence from the UK he undertook additional study and completed his membership examinations for the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in ruminant nutrition. Peter has a passion for ensuring that feeding is optimized for both production and also for the health of the animal and its ability to remain in the herd, nutrition being such a key aspect to nearly all sides of the coin with regards farm animals.

He also spent time in Vietnam, working on a large dairy unit that was being established. At that time there were around 12,000 animals on the farm with each individual unit planned to milk 2,500 cows. The project involved teaching the local vets and working with the farms to develop protocols and management systems.

He also has a keen interest in alpacas and together with publishing a guide for vets and breeders in NZ, has been the president of the NZVA camelid branch, and has been involved in lecturing and online courses in alpaca health and veterinary aspects.

Outside of work Peter enjoys spending time on the golf course among a number of other rather more diverse past times such as music and travel, and his previous stint in the UK garnered a keen interest in good single malts!

Sarah Baylis BVMS MRCVS

Since graduating in 2004 from Glasgow University, Sarah has worked in mixed practice in Shropshire and Oxfordshire, gradually working her way down to where she's from, Essex!  Sarah joined Westpoint Farm Vets in May this year fulfilling a long held desire to work solely in farm animal practice, all aspects of which she has always enjoyed.

Outside of work Sarah enjoys travel, she spent 6 months in Australia and New Zealand in 2007, and spending time with her partner Alan; a beef and arable farmer in Oxfordshire and the dogs Molly and Tess.

Andre Baptista MRCVS Veterinary Intern

Andre Baptista is originally from Portugal. He was born and raised in the countryside in a small village close to Viseu and soon developed an interest in all agricultural aspects, especially farm animals.  Andre graduated in March 2010 from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Lisbon with a Master in "Parasitological profile of free range chickens".

Andre first realised that he wanted to specialize and develop his knowledge in farm animal medicine (mainly cattle) four years ago, when he did an externship in the USA. A year later, he returned to the US to undertake an internship for a year on a dairy farm, which turned out to be an amazing learning experience. Andre also has a particular interest in parasitology.

Outside work, Andre really enjoys going to cinema, learning new languages, travelling, cooking, reading a good book, hiking, playing tennis and all aspects regarding wildlife conservation.

Kate Stevens - Office Administrator

Kate has recently taken up the position of admin assistant at Northpoint, Leaden Roding and as a new member of the team she needs introducing. Kate has been married to a beef-arable farmer for over twenty four years and has three grown-up children. Not being from a farming background herself, Kate found being a farmer's wife a big adjustment but jumped in with both feet. Kate can be found regularly out on the farm helping with calving, feeding or even running after escaped animals (of course this does not happen often!). Some of you will have already seen Kate out and about on her tractor baling grass and straw. This was a job that she adopted many, many years ago and will not miss doing less of now. Kate and her children's love of animals has often had them up at night looking after sick calves, piglets and even a hedgehog or two. Kate also manages the farm office and in her spare time runs a Scout Troop which she enjoys very much. So Kate has now taken on a new challenge and as she looks out the office window, the part of her that will miss running around after cattle is silenced by the down pour of heavy rain and strong winds! Another cup of tea anyone?
