Dairy-Tech Online TB Workshop

February 5 @ 10:30 am - 11:30 am

Identifying TB risk on farm and protecting your business from the impact of a breakdown.

Sarah Tomlinson BVM&S MRCVS, Technical Director of TB Advisory Service

A TB test failure can be one of the most devastating things to happen to a farm business. The stress and anxiety that comes with the breakdown cannot be underestimated: loss of control of your “normal” business, impact on cattle movements, loss of stock and the extra testing.

By understanding TB as a disease, Government TB policy and what your options are for trading whilst under movement restrictions can help you plan for the worst-case scenario. We all hope TB will not affect our farms but having a plan in place could massively decrease the impacts it could have on the business and the farm team.

  • What parts of your business would be affected by a TB breakdown?

Calf movements off would cease.

No cattle can initially move onto the farm, even your own heifers if on a separate holding.

  • What can you do to reduce those impacts?

Do you know what an isolation unit is?

Do you know where your nearest orange market is and how much calves are sold for?

  • What extra costs would be involved?

Loss of milk and calf sales, loss of future milk and calves.

What extra feed and bedding would be required?

  • What long term solutions are there to build resilience into your business?

Can you develop existing buildings for use as an isolation unit?

Are their long term options to work with an approved finishing unit?
