Tackling TB in the LRA | Sevenoaks

September 17 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

Free

Bovine TB is the most serious infectious disease affecting farms in England. In 2018, over 6700 herds were unable to trade due to bTB. This meant no movements off or on, unless licenced for specific reasons by APHA.

A TB reactor found on your herd means you are no longer in charge of your own business.

Although the High Risk Area (HRA) is seeing a steady small decline in new TB breakdowns the Edge Area (EA) is seeing TB spread further and further East. In 2018, the Low Risk Area (LRA) saw a rise in herds under restriction that year to 188, this level has been steadily rising over the last 10 years.

  • The average cost to the industry of a TB breakdown is £30,000
  • A TB reactor on one farm in the LRA will mean TB testing everything from 42 days of age at least twice in 120 days
  • A TB reactor with lesions will mean all cattle herds within 3km will have to test everything over 42 days of age
  • A TB reactor with lesions means all cattle holdings in the radial zone will have to pre-movement test any cattle being moved to another holding for at least a year at their own expense
  • All breakdowns in the LRA were attributed to purchased cattle from the HRA or EA or local spread via infected cattle.
